StopSmokingTherapy® is a holistic, integrated and continuing treatment for stopping smoking.

A preliminary medical examination is undertaken to approve use of StopSmokingTherapy®, emphasise the importance of hyper-hydration and eliminate any reasons why the therapy might not be appropriate. This assessment of the patient's general physiological condition is followed, where appropriate, by tailored hygiene and dietary recommendations.

After the injection, the ten-day hyperhydration protocol eliminates toxins associated with tobacco consumption through the urine. Hyperhydration can also give the patient a feeling of being full that limits the increased appetite (hyperphagia) commonly associated with stopping smoking, therefore also limiting weight gain.

Unlike the majority of treatments currently available for stopping smoking, which mainly target nicotine addiction, StopSmokingTherapy® approaches the patient holistically, taking into account the physiological, cognitive, behavioural and emotional dimensions involved in dependency.

StopSmokingTherapy®, as recommended, offers a group psycho-education session that takes place at the StopSmokingCenter®. It has been demonstrated that a group approach strengthens the effectiveness and upholding of psycho-education actions over time, particularly because it allows patients to compare their experiences of stopping smoking, share strategies that may have been useful to them and their questions, doubts and fears. The psychological impact of the awareness of “not being alone” is one of the established positive reinforcement strategies in psycho-education. This session, designed to get patients to participate, goes beyond just providing information.

It is centred around specific actions to stop smoking and stay off tobacco. The emphasis is on strategies adapted to different types of smoking based on routines and triggers for smoking (thought of as situations). Through discussion, patients can compare opinions and experiences on the issues brought up.

The main objective of the evidence-based cognitive and behavioural approach offered as part of StopSmokingTherapy® is to enable patients to be aware of their own incorrect beliefs about tobacco and the mechanisms of thought that encourage them to start again, or alternatively to stay off cigarettes, as well as to describe behaviours specific to them and their relationship with tobacco in order to come up with alternative strategies.

  • - Positive thoughts: helping the patient define their level of confidence in their ability to stop smoking and, as well as identify their negative thoughts, to help them come up with personal positive thoughts.

  • - Support relationships: helping the patient identify the people in their life most likely to support them with their decision to stop smoking.

  • - Positive reinforcement: encouraging the patient to set up a reward system in order to stay motivated in staying off tobacco (positive inner speech, pleasant activities, keeping the money saved for a personal gift)

  • - Changing routines: a “ceremony” in which the patient is separated from their last pack of cigarettes, a lighter or something else symbolic associated with their tobacco consumption.

  • - Establishing a « smoke-free » environment at work and at home. Imagining alternative routines (hot shower instead of morning cigarette, replace coffee or morning tea with herbal tea or fruit juice, occupying your hands during a telephone conversation, etc.)

  • - “Distractive thinking”: implementing an immediate strategy to refocus thought whenever the patient thinks of cigarettes. Coming up with positive thoughts and relaxing images in advance.

Training patients in deep breathing, positive imaging and/or progressive muscle relaxation. Tobacco cravings are temporary and usually disappear within 5 to 10 minutes. Patients are taught to focus their minds on positive and relaxing thoughts.

Alcohol and/or drug use may cause a relapse. Patients are encouraged to limit or abstain from alcohol and illicit substances, especially when starting to stop smoking.

After treatment in a StopSmokingCenter®, each patient receives tailored support over 12 months.
